Harps and Tangerines …

A Song for Holy Week

Susan Beth Furst

Upon misreading psalm 149:3

Praise his name with dancing, accompanied by tambourine (tangerine) and harp”.

I never let a good misread go to waste …

Call To Worship

From the lips of children

You call forth your praise

Hosanna, Hosanna

Blessed be your name

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

V1

Jesus rides a donkey

Upon God’s Holy Hill

The people dance, the donkeys prance

The branches won’t hold still

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

V2

Hosanna, save us please

All the children cry

They raise their hands as tangerines

Fall gently from the sky

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

V3

Oy! Say the pharisees

Our ears are ringing

Jesus! Stop the singing!

But the rocks cry out “Here comes the King!”

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

V4

Jesus turns the tables

In God’s Holy House

He heals the sick, the pharisees

Are quiet as a mouse

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

V5

At the dinner party

Jesus washes feet

Bread and wine for Pesach

And a bowl of tangerines

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

V6

In the olive garden

Jesus kneels and prays

His friends asleep, Judas

Betrays Him with a kiss

V7

Outside the city gates

On God’s Holy Mountain

Jesus dies upon a cross

To save us from our sins

V8

Early in the morning

The stone is rolled away

The angels say “He is not here”

Oh, Happy Day! Indeed!

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

V9

Way up on God’s Holy Hill

All the people, rocks, and trees

Donkeys, even pharisees!

Praise His holy name

Refrain

And all the children dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

And all the people dance and sing

With harps and tangerines

As we enter Holy Week, may your hearts be encouraged and full of hope as we look to the only One who saves. Jesus loves you, and died on a cross to save you from your sins. And that is the gospel truth. In a world where nothing seems to be right, He is.

May your hearts be full of joy, your mouths full of song, and your baskets overflowing with tangerines!

In His love,
